Louder..... Louder and louder I laugh and make the world around me bright; For then... my pains from within they hear not ever.
'Payattu' ('Kuri kalyanam' as it is called in some other parts) was and is a feature in northern Kerala It, represented all that was good about the society. A society that came to the help of a needy person in a small rural setting.
'payattu' on a particular day. In a small rural society, word of mouth takes care of the marketing. On the day of 'payattu', the person will put up a small pandal (shamiana) and 3-4 tables and chairs. The music system and the limited decoration will ensure publicity for the event. People will walk in on their own accord and will be offered LMPT (short form for a plate of Laddu, Mixture, Pazham(banana) and Tea). They sit and chitchat for awhile with the sponsor of the 'payattu' and others. When they leave, they will donate whatever they can to the organizer, who is in need of money. It could be Rs 25 or Rs 50 or Rs 100 or 200 or more. Details of the money given including the name of the person is noted down in a note book. Since everyone gives, the organizer gets a substantial amount ranging

Like many good things, this wonderful social practice has slowly going into the oblivion. Such a tragedy. There is much to be learned from the rural society of India. Sometimes we should wonder whether education and increased earning capability has really resulted in any progress when measured in terms of shared value systems and human empathy!!

Dear Friend,
We are organizing a fund raising campaign to help Chilla with which we have been associated for quite a long time.
Chilla is a roosting place for sex workers’ children for last 9 years . Chilla help the children to become productive and responsible citizens who can function as active partners in the social development-process through education and social activities.
‘Chilla’ is conducting a ‘changathikkuri’. Changathikkuri is an economic support system that prevails in villages of north kerala. Friends and relatives get together for fund raising when necessity arises. Those who participate sit together to have tea and snacks as a part of this. This is also known as payattu, chayakkuri etc.
Chilla is organizing changathikkuri as a part of its efforts to sustain and continue its activities. The children of chilla and artists of abhinaya will stage folk song performance and a skit on the occasion. We cordially invite you and your friends.

"There is considerable amount of political bickering regarding the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project both by Central Government and the State Government regarding how to go about implementing the project. However, most, if not all, do not seem to give weightage to the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserves findings. It is estimated that 65% of the existing coral reefs in the project area are already dead, mostly due to human interference.

Sethusamudram: Will the ships use it? Mr.K.S.Ramakrishnan, former chairman of Chennai Port Trust and also former M.D. of Poompuhar Shipping Corporation has pointed out that the objective of reducing fuel cost and time involved may not be achieved even though there is a saving of 434 nautical miles between Tuticorin and Chennai, because as an example, the levies for a 36000 tonne ship would come to Rs.60 lakhs against sailing around Sri Lanka would just cost Rs.7 Lakhs. So the question arises as to who is going to be willing to spend more? Even the NEERI report has not addressed the economic viability issue.

Dears ……

This photo is the “Pulitzer Prize” winning photo taken in 1994 during the Sudan Famine. The picture depicts a famine stricken child crawling towards an United Nations food camp located a kilometer away. The vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat it. This picture shocked the whole world. No one knows what happened to the child, including the photographer Kevin Carter who left the p;ace as soon as the photograph was taken. Three months latter he committed suicide due to depression.
